CONVENTION 'BOT PIN
Event-exclusive enamel pin
Role: Art Direction, Illustration • Client: Kidrobot
Project
In 2018, Kidrobot commissioned a limited-edition enamel pin to be released exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con. The goal was to create a collectible that would not only resonate with the Kidrobot fanbase but also stand out in the highly competitive landscape of Comic-Con exclusives. The pin needed to feel timely, iconic, and connected to both the event and the brand’s legacy.
This release marked one of the final appearances of Kidrobot’s beloved robot mascot, known simply as ‘Bot. With the character soon to be retired from active use, the pin became a moment of celebration and narrative closure. That rarity elevated the product’s emotional and collector value, serving as a tribute to longtime fans of the brand.

Visual references and inspiration.
Concept
The creative direction focused on designing a piece that felt lighthearted, site-specific, and instantly collectible. We proposed an illustration of the ‘Bot quietly reading a comic book, offering a playful nod to the Comic-Con experience and a moment of calm within the excitement of the convention. The concept allowed the character to reflect the audience rather than perform for it, creating an approachable and relatable presence.
Two distinct visual directions were explored during development. One used metallic gold as a subtle reference to California’s nickname, The Golden State, suggesting exclusivity and regional pride. The other relied on a vibrant summer-inspired palette of blues, yellows, and reds to evoke the energy and brightness of the season. After comparing digital mockups and physical tests, we moved forward with the summer palette for its stronger visual contrast and immediate impact on the convention floor.

Design Process
Sketches, references, mockups, and production studies were used throughout the process to test clarity, detail retention, and expressive tone. Because enamel pins have strict size and material limitations, every line and color choice was considered for visibility, legibility, and punch. These development visuals are shown alongside the final product to highlight how illustration, concept, and physical production were aligned from the start.

Outcome
The final enamel pin was produced as an official Comic-Con exclusive and released in limited quantities. It was met with enthusiasm by fans and quickly sold out, later becoming a prized item among collectors. Its success was tied not only to its scarcity but to the clarity of its concept and the emotional connection it created.
This project demonstrates how even a small-format collectible can carry narrative depth, product strategy, and brand storytelling when treated with care. By aligning visual identity with audience insight, cultural timing, and physical design constraints, we were able to create a product that felt both celebratory and enduring.
Design Keywords
The project was shaped by a focused set of design keywords. These helped clarify tone, inform visual decisions, and maintain alignment across the concept and final execution:
These keywords grounded the project in both brand relevance and cultural context.
